What could be more perfect for your rock garden or containers than hens and chicks! Not actual chickens, of course – that would just be fowl. These succulents get their name from the way they grow: they consist of one large rosette (the “hen”) that forms smaller rosettes around itself (the “chicks”) as it grows. If left alone, the chicks will form neat little clusters of color around the hen, or they can be divided and transplanted to grow their own chicks!
This deep, dark duo thrives in full sun locations and in gritty soil with good drainage. Hardy in zones 3-8, they’ll tough out the Winter and stay in your garden for years to come! They prefer dry conditions and should only be watered about once a week.
Sempervivum ‘Pacific Blue Ice’ is known for its cool blue-green succulent leaves. They feature a beautiful rose flush that really pops during colder months. Unlike most Hens & Chicks, this variety has a unique cupped shape.
Sempervivum ‘Silverine’ really shines with its silvery leaves flushed with pinkish red. This variety has a flatter shape than most and sports stunning deep pink flowers in mid-Summer.
The Dark Night Hens & Chicks Duo includes the following two varieties already growing and ready to plant:
1 Pacific Blue Ice Hens & Chicks in a 3-4” grower pot
1 Silverine Hens & Chicks in a 3-4” grower pot
