Planting Gladiolus

Where to Plant Gladiolus

Grow gladiolus in a full sun location with soil that drains well. Gladiolus are best planted directly in the ground. Miniature Gladiolus can be grown in pots or planted directly in the ground. 

How to Plant Gladiolus

Plant gladiolus in spring or early summer after the danger of frost has passed. Tall Gladiolus should be planted 3-4" deep and spaced 6-9" apart. Miniature gladiolus should be planted 2-3" deep and spaced 4-6" apart. The pointed end of the bulb should be facing up when planted. Water the planting area after the initial planting. Until sprouts are seen above ground keep the planting area dry by avoiding extra water other than natural rainfall. Tall gladiolus may require staking to hold the leaves and flowers upright. Start staking the bulbs as soon as growth is seen above ground to provide early and strong support.
